COVID-19 School Plan
The Charleston Catholic School covid-19 Plan
(subject to change and future revisions)
We have successfully had in person learning since August. Due to the recent spike in the pandemic the school had remote learning the week before Christmas break, and we continue to have remote learning. We will resume in person learning on January 19. We continue to be in a fluid situation and plans may change depending upon any spike in this pandemic. Our primary goal is to have students on campus in a safe learning environment. We will continue to accommodate families as needed.
Daily Health Checks
Temperatures will be taken upon arrival, and any employee, staff, or student with a fever of 100.4 or higher will be sent home. A team of teachers will take temperatures of students during morning drop-off and the carpool driver will be asked several questions about the children’s health. Students without any symptoms will be allowed into the campus.
If a student displays one of the symptoms during the school day, he/she will be sent to the office, temperature will be taken, and the parent/guardian will be contacted. We will follow DHEC protocol on exclusion from school. Teachers or staff members who develop one of the symptoms will come to the office, temperature will be taken, and decision will be made about going home. We will follow DHEC protocol on exclusion from work/school. DHEC Protocol on Exclusion from School Students or staff with symptoms of COVID-19 should be excluded from school if they have:
One (1) of the following: Fever Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing Loss of taste or smell New or worsening cough
Two (2) of the following: Sore throat, Muscle or body aches, Chills, Fatigue, Headache, Congestion or runny nose, Diarrhea, Nausea or vomiting
2 Note: Any child with any one of these symptoms should consider not attending school regardless of meeting exclusion criteria. If these symptoms are explainable by an underlying condition (such as shortness of breath or cough for an individual with asthma) exclusion may not be necessary. Screening for History of Exposure Office will keep a log of employees and students who have tested positive for COVID-19. After the 14-day quarantine, they can return to work/school as long as they have a note from their physician or no longer display any symptoms, including no fever for 72 hours without taking any medication.
**Not Allowing Entry to Someone Symptomatic The principal, office manager, or staff will inform parents or guardians if their children display symptoms. Those students who display symptoms when dropped off in the morning will remain in the car and go home.
Students, teachers, and staff members who have documented health conditions that would be negatively impacted by wearing a mask will be granted an exemption from wearing a mask by the principal.
The office will have extra masks in case students or staff need one for any reason.
Facility Cleaning and Classrooms
Cleaning company will clean every night and use disinfecting fogger at least once per month. Maintenance will clean door handles, handrails on staircases, etc. at least once during the day. Each classroom will have disinfectants for teachers to use as needed. If a student or teacher becomes sick during the school day, the class will be moved to a designated area / room. The classroom will be disinfected.
Windows can be opened in most classrooms, and doors can be left open in all classrooms to increase ventilation. HVAC is regularly maintained, and air filters are changed regularly.
Classrooms and Class Size
Classrooms have been arranged to provide spacing between student desks and having all desks face in the same direction. Almost every classroom meets the standard of 36 square feet per person (counting students and teachers). In some classrooms, the spacing is 30 square feet per person. Weather permitting, according to a schedule, some classes will be held outside. Students will remain in their home base classrooms (homeroom) for most of their classes throughout the school day. On occasion, students will have some classes in other rooms/areas on the campus with appropriate spacing. Upper school classes will remain in homeroom and teachers will change classrooms.
Hallways For most of the school day, teachers will move, not students. When students are in transition, appropriate cautions will be taken (distancing and masks). Hallways will be marked for 2-way traffic and social distancing.
