Dear CCS Families,

The school year is off to a wonderful start. Everyone is getting used
to being back in a routine and Thursday, September 4th, we welcome
everyone to Open House. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your
children’s teachers and have a chance to see their classrooms. Open
House begins at 5:30 PM. There will be parking available at Trojan
Labor, After School House and The Long Shoremen’s Association parking
lots, located on King Street across from the school. Ms. Lisa and
some of the after care staff will be available to watch students
while you go to the classrooms.

On Tuesday, we will welcome our new Music and Chorus teacher Mrs.
Metzler. We are excited to have her as part of our CCS family.

Please be sure to check your communication envelopes on Tuesday. They
will contain important information about Grandparents Day.

We would like to remind everyone that Monday is Labor Day, and we hope
everyone enjoys safe and happy Holiday.

Spiritual Reflection

In honor of the Labor Day holiday, here is a prayer for the
intercession of St. Joseph, patron saint of workers.
A Catholic Prayer for WorkersO glorious Joseph! Who concealed your
incomparable and regal dignity of custodian of Jesus and of the
Virgin Mary under the humble appearance of a craftsman and provided
for them with your work, protect with loving power your sons,
especially entrusted to you.

You know their anxieties and sufferings, because you yourself
experienced them at the side of Jesus and of His Mother. Do not allow
them, oppressed by so many worries, to forget the purpose for which
they were created by God. Do not allow the seeds of distrust to take
hold of their immortal souls. Remind all the workers that in the
fields, in factories, in mines, and in scientific laboratories, they
are not working, rejoicing, or suffering alone, but at their side is
Jesus, with Mary, His Mother and ours, to sustain them, to dry the
sweat of their brow, giving value to their toil. Teach them to turn
work into a very high instrument of sanctification as you did. Amen.

-Blessed Pope John XXIII

Welcome Mrs. Metzler!

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Chorus and
Music Teacher, Mrs. Karen Metzler.
Mrs. Metzler earned her Bachelor of Music degree with a Music
Education major from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC. She has
taught music to students in Grades K -9 in Virginia and North
Carolina. She and her husband are parishioners of The Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist.

Principal’s Message

August 22, 2014

Dear CCS Families,

We are off to a tremendous school year. The students are happy to be
back at school and we are thrilled to begin the school year on one
campus.

We began our week with a Blessing of the new playground area. We are
very appreciative of all the efforts made to raise the funds needed
for the new playground surface. Mr. Eddie Keating worked tirelessly
to raise money and supervise the entire project, as he carried out
Mrs. Keatings final wishes. We know Mrs. Keating is smiling down as
she watches the students thoroughly enjoying themselves. Thank you
Father Allen for Blessing the area. Finally thank you to City
Councilman Mitchell our neighbor for attending the ceremony. It was a
beautiful day and a wonderful tribute to Mrs. Keating.

Just a friendly reminder to everyone, that morning drop off is 7:30
am. Teachers arrive between 7:15 and 7:30 am. Please be courteous
to leave the parking spaces open for them so they may get to their
classrooms in time to welcome students for the day. Teachers arrive
at carpool duty at 7:30 am.

We hope you enjoy your weekend and look forward to seeing everyone
Monday morning.

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Give all teachers Your constant encouragement and guide them in their

Spirit of God, make us effective witnesses of Your truth to all whose
lives we touch. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen.

1st Day of School August 18th

Please note carpool procedure as stated in the hand book:

CARPOOL – DROP OFF – PICK UP
All students must be dropped off or picked up from Benson Street. We ask that you use KING STREET, RIGHT ON HUGER STREET, RIGHT ON BENSON STREET so that your child will have safe access to the sidewalk. Please have name card placed on front dash of the passenger side of your vehicle.

PLEASE DO NOT DOUBLE PARK to walk your student into the building or to take care of business in the office. At all times, avoid parking in spaces marked for Sacred Heart Church personnel beside the rectory. Also, refrain from blocking the priest’s driveway and the parking spaces for church personnel.

Teachers are on duty during morning drop-off (7:30 – 8:00) and afternoon pick-up (3:00 – 3:15) to provide for the safety of students entering or leaving the campus and to maintain the safe flow of traffic.

Students SHOULD NOT EXIT vehicles on Huger, Congress or King Streets since the safety of the children cannot be provided on these three streets. Students should not get in or out of a vehicle unless directed to do so by a teacher on duty.

Vehicles are prohibited from parking on the playground area during school hours (7:30 am – 6:00 PM). Students not picked up by 3:15 pm will be sent to the Aftercare Program for supervision purposes, and parents will be charged the published fees for use of this program.

Parents are asked to remain in their cars and to proceed through the regular carpool process. Please do not park and walk up to the school to drop off or pick up students.

If you were unable to drop off supplies last week, do not worry. Upper school students will be available to help bring supplies in. Please do not park and bring supplies to the classroom.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and look forward to the 2014 – 15 school year!

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Prayer For The Beginning of the School Year:

Lord God, we gather at the start of a new school year in your name
and in response to your invitation to teach all nations. Bless us
individually and collectively. Make fruitful the talents which you
planted within us, that we may lead our school to be a center of
faith and knowledge, a model of Christian community and an example of
mutual service. Fill each of our hearts with faith, our days with
good works, our lives with your love, and may your truth and wisdom
be present in all our actions. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our
model and Savior.

Amen

Dear CCS Families,

I hope you have had an enjoyable and relaxing summer. I would like
to welcome all new and seasoned parents to the 2014 -15 school year!

The teachers have returned to work. We were treated with a wonderful
breakfast and “survival kit”. On behalf of the teachers and faculty I
would like to thank all of you who make up the PTO and the PTO
officers for orchestrating a wonderful welcome back for all of us.

The teachers are busy getting their classrooms ready for the students
arrival on Monday, August 18, 2014, at 8:00 AM. Please remember that
Monday will be a half day with an 11:15 AM dismissal and no after
care.

We look forward to a new and exciting school year!

Playground Dedication

The Joan Marie Keating Playground Dedication will take place on
Monday, August 18, 2014 at 10:00 AM.

Unfortunately there was a storm on Saturday, August 9th. Along with
the heavy rains and wind, the large tree on the playground fell. The
tree has been removed and we hope to have repairs completed by
Monday. Either way the dedication will go on as planned.
