College Edge Practice Testing for 7th & 8th grade Students Sat. March 21st

March 10, 2015

Dear CCS Families of Students in Grades 7 & 8,

In December, Tom Ihrke with College Edge came to our school to meet with parents of students in grades 7 & 8 to explain that students who take practice tests for ACT and SAT can not only improve their scores by junior / senior year in high school but also can qualify for substantial scholarship funding by achieving certain scores. College Edge has developed a practice test for ACT (and SAT) for students in Grades 7 & 8 — abbreviated version of the real test with some actual former test questions.

College Edge will offer the practice ACT for Charleston Catholic students on Saturday, March 21, at 9:00 a.m. in the 8th grade room. The test will take approximately 75 minutes. The school building will be open at 8:30 a.m. Students may arrive any time between 8:30 and 8:55 a.m. Students need to be picked up by 10:30 a.m. Each student should bring two #2 pencils to take the test.

The cost of the test is $50. Please complete the attached sign-up sheet if you want your son / daughter to take this practice test and make check payable to College Edge (you can bring the check with you on the day of the test). There will be a follow-up session with parents and students in late April or early May to go over the results of the test.

Some of our students get experience taking the ACT or SAT or PSAT in 7th or 8th grade if they qualify for these tests because of the exceptionally high scores on the ITBS tests. College Edge is offering this opportunity for all of our students to get experience in taking these college admission tests.

Please return the completed sign-up form to the CCS office no later than Tuesday, March 17. This testing opportunity is open to any 7th or 8th grade student.

Bring check for $50 payable to College Edge on the day of the test.

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Principal’s Message

February 27, 2015

Dear CCS Families and Friends,

This past weekend, our CCS Saints basketball teams represented our
school very well in the Diocese of Charleston Youth State Basketball
tournament. The Senior boys’ team and Senior girls’ team won the
consolation brackets in their divisions, and the Junior boys’ team
finished in fourth place in their division. Most importantly, our
teams exhibited great sportsmanship, teamwork and positive attitudes
all weekend (whether they won or lost). We are most grateful to all
of our coaches, parents, and fans who supported our athletes during
the whole season.

This past week, Monday through Wednesday, our school had the Internal
Review for Accreditation standards of the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Review Team read and analyzed all
of the documents that our administration, board and faculty prepared
for the visit. The Team interviewed teachers, board members,
administration and students. They also observed classrooms, attended
our school Mass (celebrated by Bishop Guglielmone), and saw the daily
operations on campus. The Review Team was quite impressed with our
school, and they identified strengths and areas for improvement.
When we have the complete report, we will share with all of our
stakeholders.

This coming week will be an abbreviated week of classes for the
students, as all of the Catholic school teachers in the state will
attend the Diocese of Charleston Teachers’ Education Conference in
Columbia on Thursday and Friday, March 5 & 6. This is a great
professional development opportunity for our teachers.

Yours in Christ,

body in a nurturing family environment within the sacred tradition
and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Teachers challenge the
students to discover their own unique gifts through creative inquiry
and critical thinking in the core academic subjects and the arts.

Important Carpool Memo

February 25, 2015

Dear CCS Families,

This is a reminder regarding carpool procedures as stated in the Parent/Student handbook. PLEASE, families coming from Mt. Pleasant or I-26 do not approach the school from Meeting Street to Huger with the intention of turning LEFT onto Benson Street. This is causing traffic issues and is a matter of safety.

The correct flow of carpool is the following…

CARPOOL – DROP OFF – PICK UP
All students must be dropped off or picked up from Benson Street. We ask that you use KING STREET, RIGHT ON HUGER STREET, RIGHT ON BENSON STREET so that your child will have safe access to the sidewalk. Please have name card placed on front dash of the passenger side of your vehicle.

Families coming from Mt. Pleasant should exit East Bay Street or Meeting Street. Right on Columbus or Line Street, Right on King Street, Right on Huger Street, Right on Benson Street. Or take the 17 to the Crosstown, take the King Street Exit, turn left onto King Street and then right on Huger Street and right on Benson Street.

Please do NOT attempt to turn left onto Benson Street from Huger Street.

PLEASE DO NOT DOUBLE PARK to walk your student into the building or to take care of business in the office. At all times, avoid parking in spaces marked for Sacred Heart Church personnel beside the rectory. Also, refrain from blocking the priest’s driveway and the parking spaces for church personnel.

Teachers are on duty during morning drop-off (7:30 – 8:00) and afternoon pick-up (3:00 – 3:15) to provide for the safety of students entering or leaving the campus and to maintain the safe flow of traffic.

Students SHOULD NOT EXIT vehicles on Huger, Congress or King Streets since the safety of the children cannot be provided on these three streets. Students should not get in or out of a vehicle unless directed to do so by a teacher on duty.

Vehicles are prohibited from parking on the playground area during school hours (7:30 am – 6:00 PM). Students not picked up by 3:15 pm will be sent to the Aftercare Program for supervision purposes, and parents will be charged the published fees for use of this program.

Parents are asked to remain in their cars and to proceed through the regular carpool process. Please do not park and walk up to the school to drop off or pick up students.

In addition, if you need to speak to a teacher on the carpool line, please make arrangements to talk to them at a different time. This will help carpool run in a timely manner.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Fred McKay
