Principal’s Message

CCS Families,

What an exciting week this has been as we have been following Pope
Francis in the news! It is obvious that the Pope has been very well
received by all of the audiences that he has addressed in Washington
and New York. We expect that he will get another enthusiastic
welcome this weekend in Philadelphia. Enjoy the continued news
coverage of the Papal visit this weekend!

Next week, on Thursday, October 1st, we will welcome Mrs. Sandra
Leatherwood, Director of Catholic Education for our Diocese, to our
campus for her annual school visit. Mrs. Leatherwood will spend the
school day observing classes, talking with teachers and office staff,
and reviewing documents that the Catholic Schools Office has
requested. In addition, she will attend our school board meeting
that evening and discuss various topics with our school board
members.

Have a blessed weekend!

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Spiritual Reflection

As Pope Francis goes to Ground Zero to pray with other religious
leaders, please join them with your prayers. Here is a prayer for the
preservation of peace and justice from the Roman Missal:

O God, who show a father’s care for all,
grant, in your mercy,
that the members of the human race,
to whom you have given a single origin,
may form in peace a single family
and always be united by a fraternal spirit.
Through Christ our Lord.

Just a quick reminder that this Friday, September 25th is the last day to turn in your Box Tops for Education for the fall challenge!

Remember to put them in a ziplock bag and put your child’s grade and teacher on the outside of the bag. All we need to collect is 500 more and we will meet our goal and the children will receive a school wide T.A.G. Day.

As always, thanks for your willingness to help. It is really appreciated.

Principal’s Message

September 18, 2015

Dear CCS Families and Friends,

Next week, September 21 – 25, we will have standardized testing for
First Grade and Grades 3-8. The students in Grades 3-8 will take the
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, which are nationally normed achievement
tests in the core subject areas of reading, language arts, math,
science and social studies. These tests give us an indication of our
students’ achievement levels relative to their peers in similar
grades in schools across the country. These tests are given in
Catholic schools, private schools and public schools. We conduct our
testing in the morning and should conclude with the testing by
Thursday. Make-up testing is available the following week if
students are absent. Also, Grades 1 & 4 take the CogAT ability test
that measures a baseline of a student’s ability in three areas:
verbal, quantitative and nonverbal. These scores are measured by
their age and grade level.

Typically, CCS students have done well on these standardized tests,
and we are proud of their accomplishments. In fact, last year, our
school’s overall average on the ITBS tests was in the top 4 of the
Catholic schools in our Diocese (total of 28 schools). We wish our
students the best next week, and the best preparation is a good
night’s sleep and good breakfast.

Next Friday, September 25th, we will teach the child protection
lessons in our religion classes. This is part of the Diocese Child
Protection Program. We sent the information about the lessons and
the program to you earlier this month, and hopefully you have made
yourselves aware of the material to be taught and the overall purpose
of this program.

Finally, next week is a momentous occasion for our country:
Pope Francis will visit the USA. His schedule is: September 22-24 in
Washington, D.C.; Sept. 25 in New York; and Sept 26-27 in
Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. Please pray for a
safe visit for our pope and keep up with the national news about the
Pope’s activities.

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Spiritual Reflection

As our shepherd Pope Francis begins his pilgrimage to the United
States, please pray for the Church in our country. Here is a prayer
for that intention from the Roman Missal:

O God, who in each pilgrim Church throughout the world
make visible the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church,
graciously grant
that your faithful may be so united to their shepherd
and gathered together in the Holy Spirit
through the Gospel and the Eucharist,
as to worthily embody the universality of your people
and become a sign and instrument in the world of the presence of
Christ.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Welcome Ms. Bailey!

We are happy to announce we have hired a new Physical Education
Teacher! Ms. Dawn Bailey will join our family on Monday, September
21st. Ms. Bailey has a Masters Degree in Physical Education and 29
years of teaching experience.

Please give her a warm Saints welcome!

Spiritual Reflection

“Lord, please let us understand one another to create world peace.
Let us come together in Your love. Let us treat others the way we
want to be treated. Give us the gift of understanding and
forgiveness. Amen.”

Patriot Day!

Today is Patriot Day. It is remembered globally as the anniversary of
the catastrophic terrorist attacks on the USA on September 11, 2001.
Each year on this day, the American flag is flown at half-staff to
honour and commemorate those lives lost.
