Principal’s Message

March 11, 2016

CCS Families and Friends,

Today marks the end of the third quarter of the academic year. It is
amazing how time flies, and before we know it Easter will be here.
This past week was another occasion for milestones at Charleston
Catholic.

This past Monday, our Saints Golf team had their first match in the
City of Charleston Middle School Golf League. This was our first
ever golf match (we just started a golf team a few weeks ago), and
our Saints Golfers finished in 5th place out of 10 teams. This
coming Monday, March 14, will be their second golf outing. Go
Saints!

Our tennis season got underway this week. The Blue Saints team
(grades 3-4) and Black Saints team (5th grade) played competitive
matches, and they did very well. Next week, the White Saints (grades
6-8) and Red Saints (grades 5-8) teams will have their first matches.
Good luck to all of our tennis teams this season.

Congratulations to our top spellers, Brendan and Josh, for their
excellent representation of CCS and the Diocese in the Post & Courier
Spelling Bee last night. Out of 50 students, they finished 13th and
14th. We are proud of their accomplishments in spelling this year.

Fourth Quarter begins on Monday, March 14, and students will wear
their summer uniforms (except on Wednesdays when they will wear their
Mass day uniforms).

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Spiritual Reflection

In this Jubilee Year, may the Church echo the word of God that
resounds strong and clear as a message and sign of pardon, strength,
aid, and love. May she never tire of extending mercy and be ever
patient in offering compassion and comfort. May the Church
become the voice of every man and woman…
Pope Francis, The Name of God Is Mercy

Post & Courier Spellbound Participants

Congratulations Brendan and Joshua! They placed 13th and 14th
(respectively) out of 50 at the Spellbound Spelling Bee last night!
Way to go Saints!

February 19, 2016

CCS Families and Friends,

Congratulations are in order for our upper school math and science
club. This past Saturday, our students competed in the bridge
building competition at the Citadel that was sponsored by the
Engineering Department. Our students submitted several bridges in
the competition and we are proud of their efforts and
accomplishments. We won several trophies for their work. See the
picture and caption below for the details of the awards.

As our basketball season winds down, I would like to recognize some
of our teams at this time. We are proud of the effort,
sportsmanship, and attitude of our Saints teams and the leadership of
our coaches. Our Junior Boys and Junior Girls have concluded their
seasons. Our Senior Boys have concluded their regular seasons and
will compete in the Diocese of Charleston Youth Basketball Tournament
in Aiken next weekend. Our Senior Girls have completed their regular
seasons and will play in the Championship Game of the Parochial
League this Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Bishop England High School Gym.
Please support our Lady Saints in person or in spirit as they attempt
to finish undefeated and as champions. In addition, they too will
compete in the Diocesan tournament in Aiken next weekend. Go Saints!

Our 7/8 coed team, Boys 9/10 team and Girls 9/10 team still have some
games to play next week and in early March in the St. Joseph league.
Best wishes to them in their upcoming games. Also, we are very
grateful to our Saints Cheerleaders for leading the cheers at various
games this season. We are proud of all of our cheerleaders and
basketball players.

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Spiritual Reflection

Peace Prayer of St. Francis

Lord,
make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred,
let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving
that we receive;
it is in pardoning
that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying
that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

January 29, 2016

CCS Families,

As we begin Catholic Schools Week this weekend with Masses at our 4
Peninsula Parishes, it is time to recognize and celebrate our
Catholic schools. At Charleston Catholic, we are most grateful for
the excellent teaching and dedication of our faculty. We appreciate
the involvement of our families and the wonderful support provided to
our teachers and students. We express our gratitude to the generous
financial support of our benefactors who contribute to our annual
fund, building fund, auction, tuition assistance and scholarship
funds. We are blessed with the spiritual leadership and support of
Bishop Guglielmone as well as the priests who celebrate our school
Masses: thank you, Msgr. Brovey, Fr. Willey, Fr. Henry, Fr. Allen,
and Fr. Patrick.

Thank you very much to our CCS families who have re-enrolled their
children for next school year. We have had an outstanding response
from our current families, and we are most grateful for your
confidence in the quality of Catholic education that we provide at
CCS. Many of our classes are either at capacity or near capacity,
and we expect to fill remaining seats with new students as we have
had numerous tours with potential families.

I was very proud of our 8th Grade Class with their participation in
the School Choice Rally in Columbia this past Wednesday and with
their outstanding behavior as we met with two state senators in their
offices and observed the opening ceremonies and procedures of the
Senate’s legislative session that day. Great job, 8th Grade!

Congratulations to Brendan, 7th grade, for winning our school-wide
Geography Bee. Also, we are proud of George (8th) for second place
and Mason (5th) for third place. Brendan will compete at the state
level by taking a written geography test. Best wishes to him in this
state competition.

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Catholic Schools Week Prayer

Almighty Father,

You sent forth your Son as a beacon of hope for all people. As
Teacher, he has given us the prime example of the importance of
education. As disciples, we look to him for inspiration and strength.
Thank you for the many sisters, brothers, priests, and laypeople who
have dedicated their lives in service to our Catholic schools. Thank
you for the teachers and administrators who sustain our schools
today. Thank you for the parents who have given support and witness
to the importance of Catholic education in their daily lives. Thank
you for the students who work hard to further their education.

Amen

Box Top$ News!

January 28, 2016

Dear Charleston Catholic School Families,

It is time to call upon all your friends, neighbors and relatives and start collecting Box Top$. Our last collection date for this school year will be Friday, February 19th. It is important that all of us collect as many Box Tops as possible.

The funds that the PTO receives from the collection of Box Top$ help provide birthday gifts for our teachers and staff as well as monthly treats and lunches for them. We are so blessed to have such fabulous teachers and staff at Charleston Catholic and always want to show them how much we appreciate all they do for our children. Our school wide goal is to collect at least 7,000 Box Top$ this collection period.

If the school wide goal is met, the reward will be a school wide T.A.G. day. In addition, the class that collects the most Box Top$ will get a pizza party!! So let’s start clipping and bring in the most Box Top$ that Charleston Catholic has ever collected.

FYI: For the 2014-15 school year, CCS PTO earned a total of $892.30. Our goal for this school year, 2015-16 is a total of $1,000.00. The CCS PTO has earned $696.80 towards this goal from our Fall collection.

Also, you can earn 5 Bonus Box Top$ for CCS if you go to the Box Top$ website and enter a special code:
• www.BTFE.com
• Code: EWWL3-4GF3H-CC3R

Thanks in advance for your participation.

CCS Families,

What a week for academic achievements by our students! Last Friday,
at the South Carolina Junior Beta Club convention in Myrtle Beach, we
had very good effort by all of our Beta members in their
competitions, and some outstanding results for two of our students.
Carson (8th grade) won first place in the Essay contest, and Isabella
(8th grade) won second place in the Art contest for oil / acrylics
painting. Both Carson and Isabella earned the opportunity to compete
in the National Beta Club convention in New Orleans this summer.

This past Thursday (yesterday), three of our upper school students
participated in the Coastal Region Catholic School Spelling Bee at
Christ Our King – Stella Maris School. Among the 15 contestants, two
of our students finished in first and second place. We are proud of
the efforts of Carson (8th), Joshua (7th) and Brendan (7th). Brendan
placed first and Joshua placed second. Both Brendan and Joshua will
represent CCS and the Diocese in the Post and Courier Spelling Bee
for the Tri-County area this spring.

Congratulations to our students for their excellence in academic
achievements! Go Saints!

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Congratulations!
