Principal’s Message

September 18, 2015

Dear CCS Families and Friends,

Next week, September 21 – 25, we will have standardized testing for
First Grade and Grades 3-8. The students in Grades 3-8 will take the
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, which are nationally normed achievement
tests in the core subject areas of reading, language arts, math,
science and social studies. These tests give us an indication of our
students’ achievement levels relative to their peers in similar
grades in schools across the country. These tests are given in
Catholic schools, private schools and public schools. We conduct our
testing in the morning and should conclude with the testing by
Thursday. Make-up testing is available the following week if
students are absent. Also, Grades 1 & 4 take the CogAT ability test
that measures a baseline of a student’s ability in three areas:
verbal, quantitative and nonverbal. These scores are measured by
their age and grade level.

Typically, CCS students have done well on these standardized tests,
and we are proud of their accomplishments. In fact, last year, our
school’s overall average on the ITBS tests was in the top 4 of the
Catholic schools in our Diocese (total of 28 schools). We wish our
students the best next week, and the best preparation is a good
night’s sleep and good breakfast.

Next Friday, September 25th, we will teach the child protection
lessons in our religion classes. This is part of the Diocese Child
Protection Program. We sent the information about the lessons and
the program to you earlier this month, and hopefully you have made
yourselves aware of the material to be taught and the overall purpose
of this program.

Finally, next week is a momentous occasion for our country:
Pope Francis will visit the USA. His schedule is: September 22-24 in
Washington, D.C.; Sept. 25 in New York; and Sept 26-27 in
Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. Please pray for a
safe visit for our pope and keep up with the national news about the
Pope’s activities.

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Spiritual Reflection

As our shepherd Pope Francis begins his pilgrimage to the United
States, please pray for the Church in our country. Here is a prayer
for that intention from the Roman Missal:

O God, who in each pilgrim Church throughout the world
make visible the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church,
graciously grant
that your faithful may be so united to their shepherd
and gathered together in the Holy Spirit
through the Gospel and the Eucharist,
as to worthily embody the universality of your people
and become a sign and instrument in the world of the presence of
Christ.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Welcome Ms. Bailey!

We are happy to announce we have hired a new Physical Education
Teacher! Ms. Dawn Bailey will join our family on Monday, September
21st. Ms. Bailey has a Masters Degree in Physical Education and 29
years of teaching experience.

Please give her a warm Saints welcome!

Principal’s Message

September 4, 2015

Dear CCS Families and Friends,

This Saturday will be the funeral Mass for Mr. John Orr, Sr. at 11:00
a.m. in St. Patrick Catholic Church. Mr. Orr had a special fondness
for The Charleston Catholic School. This relationship began when his
wife, Mrs. Yvonne Tolley Orr, was Principal of Charleston Catholic
from 2000 to 2006.

Mr. Orr would volunteer in the lunch room on Fridays, attend CCS
events throughout the school year, and spread the word about CCS
among his business contacts through his work at The Charleston Place
Hotel. When I became Principal at CCS, Mr. Orr told me that although
his wife was retiring he was not, and he continued to volunteer on
Friday to serve lunch for another five years.

I had the pleasure to get acquainted with Mr. Orr during that time
and even kept our friendship going until his recent passing. I
enjoyed his humor, witnessed his love for CCS students when he was on
campus, and respected him for his faithfulness to the Catholic
Church. Mr. Orr will be missed by our Charleston Catholic School
Community. Well done, good and faithful servant!

Yours in Christ,

Fred McKay

Spiritual Reflection

A Prayer for Fidelity to WorkGlorious St. Joseph, model of all who
are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work
conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my natural
inclinations; to work with gratitude and joy, considering it an honor
to employ and develop, by means of labor, the gifts received from
God, disregarding difficulties and weariness; to work, above all,
with purity of intention and with detachment from self, having always
before my eyes death, and the account which I must render of time
lost, of talents wasted, of good omitted, of vain complacency in
success, so fatal to the work of God. All for Jesus, all for Mary,
all after your example, patriarch Joseph. This will be my watchword
in life and in death. Amen.

Open House Was A Huge Success!

Thank you to all the parents who attended Open House on Tuesday
evening.

Novena

June 22, 2015

Dear CCS Families,

In the wake of the deadly shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church, Bishop Guglielmone asks that all South Carolina Catholics pray a novena for the victims of the massacre, and for healing within the Emanuel AME Church community.

“Lord, we pray for those who have been devastated by recent tragedies. We remember those who have lost their lives so suddenly. We hold in our hearts the families forever changed by grief and loss. Bring them consolation and comfort. Surround them with our prayers for strength. Bless those who have survived and heal their memories of trauma and devastation. May they have the courage to face the days ahead. Help us to respond with generosity in prayer, in assistance, and in comfort to the best of our abilities. Keep our hearts focused on the needs of all the community. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Father Henry of St. Patrick Catholic Church, 134 St. Phillip Street, will be praying the Rosary nightly at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Beginning tonight through Saturday at 7 PM each evening. Everyone is welcome to attend.
